Tips & Hints

We have compiled some important information here for pond and water garden owners.  Be sure to check out our area for FAQ's or Frequently Asked Questions at the end of this section.

Water Temperature

Outdoor water thermometers are an essential tool for pond owners. A pond's biological activity slows as water temperature cools.  Changes in water temperature in spring and fall indicate when to begin winterizing the pond and when it is alright to re-start the pond in spring.  Fish require a lighter mixture of food in cooler weather.  Fish must not be fed in temperatures below 48°F, even if they appear interested.  Need a pond or water feature thermometer?

Fish Care

Several small feedings throughout the day are better than one large feeding because fish are natural foragers.  All food should be consumed within 5-10 minutes.  Switch to a light food in the fall as fish metabolism slows.  Feed according to water temperature.
